A community inhabited by gypsies in southern Italy, characterized by typical poverty and chaos. A fourteen-year-old boy longs to grow up quickly and be independent like his older brother. He smokes, drinks, and learns the skills of stealing from his brother; being illiterate doesn't matter, as long as he can recognize money. When his brother is arrested, he escalates his crimes, stealing cars and breaking into houses, during which he encounters an African youth and suddenly feels the warmth of humanity. However, he ultimately discovers that the price of adulthood is learning about betrayal and ruthlessness. Directed by American-Italian filmmaker Jonas Carpignano, who made a short film of the same name three years ago, this time with Martin Scorsese as a producer, employing non-professional actors to capture the vivid reality of the slums. It represents Italy in the competition for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
