Eddie the Barber (played by Billy Bob Thornton) leads a mundane life, and his relationship with his wife Doris (played by Frances McDormand), who works as a bookkeeper in a department store, is superficial. Eddie suspects that his wife is having an affair with her boss, Dave. One day, a customer Eddie serves boasts about his booming dry cleaning business and tries to persuade Eddie to invest. Determined not to live a lonely life in the small town, Eddie decides to buy shares and anonymously threatens Dave to extort money for his investment. Eddie receives a payoff, but the situation quickly spirals out of control when Dave confronts Eddie and ends up getting killed. Dave's death leads to Doris going to prison, while Eddie remains free from suspicion. He thus detaches himself from the events and spends his time listening to the music of a young girl, Betty (played by Scarlett Johansson). Soon, a car accident changes everything... The film won the Best Director Award at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, the Best Cinematography at the 2002 BAFTA Awards, and 19 other accolades including Best Actor from the London Film Critics Circle and Best Screenplay.
