Prison warden Paul (Tom Hanks) welcomes an extraordinary killer—John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan). John has been sentenced to death for killing two young girls and has arrived at the infamous Cold Mountain Prison, which has a patch of green land known as "The Green Mile," beyond which lies the execution site. John is not the brutal figure one might expect; on the contrary, he is surprisingly gentle and intelligent. John's arrival brings revolutionary changes to the lives of everyone in the prison: he injects life into old inmate Trevor's little mouse, providing Trevor with final solace in his last days; he miraculously saves Paul and Melinda from their suffering; he pulls Brutus back from the brink of death... During this time, Paul also sees the true essence of life through John. The day of John's execution finally arrives.
