This is a modern-style drama that introduces the life and thoughts of philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951), born in Vienna and educated at Cambridge. His main interest lies in exploring the nature and limits of language. The film employs the simplest black background, with all investments going into costumes, actors, and lighting, while the composition resembles the dark Enlightenment painting. Wittgenstein appears as a young boy, representing a repressive childhood, with his family on screen dressed in Roman-style robes. A series of vignettes depict his journey from childhood, through World War I, to eventually becoming a professor at Cambridge and collaborating with Bertrand Russell and John Maynard Keynes. Director Derek Jarman uses some theatrical sketches and imaginative tricks, such as the appearance of a Martian dwarf, to portray Wittgenstein's aristocratic demeanor, Jewish background, and homosexual inclinations.
