Twenty years ago, the mighty Roman Empire sent out the Roman Ninth Legion, composed of 5,000 elite soldiers, which mysteriously vanished in the Scottish Highlands. Marcus (Channing Tatum), the son of the legion's leader, is brave and skilled in battle, fighting on the front lines. After being severely injured in a war, he must recuperate at his uncle's home. During his recovery, Marcus saves a slave named Esca (Jamie Bell) in the arena and takes him as a servant. Soon after, Marcus hears that a tribe in the north has discovered the lost eagle standard of his father, and he is determined to restore his father's honor by retrieving the standard. Marcus sets off with Esca, who is more familiar with the northern environment. Along the way, their master-servant relationship experiences various ups and downs and mutual tests. Especially when they encounter the fierce Prince of the Selgovae (Tahar Rahim), Marcus discovers that Esca's identity is far more complicated than that of an ordinary slave. Who controls the eagle standard, and how did the Ninth Legion perish? The truth becomes increasingly elusive...
