In Prague in 1988, cellist Luka (played by Zdenek Sverák) has long lost his orchestral job and can only make a living by accompanying at a funeral home and repairing gravestones. This middle-aged bachelor is quite charming in front of women and enjoys the attention, but his difficult life forces him to go against his principles and enter into a sham marriage with a Soviet woman for compensation. A few days after their marriage, the Soviet woman turns to West Germany, leaving her five-year-old son Korya (played by Andrei Chalimon) for Luka to raise. Luka complains about the arrogance of Soviets to Korya in Czech, a language the child does not understand, while also dealing with the police investigating the fake marriage and his mother who is hostile toward Soviets. Luka asks several of his girlfriends to help take care of Korya, and gradually, the father and son develop a dependence on each other. Soon, the Soviet government wants to reclaim the child, and taking advantage of the chaotic situation at the end of the 1980s, Luka runs away with Korya... This film won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1997 and received numerous accolades, including the Honorary Award at the 1996 Venice Film Festival.
