This film is based on the true story of 61,000 Allied prisoners forced to build the Thailand-Burma Railway during World War II. Young Scottish officer Captain Ernest Gordon is captured by Japanese forces during a battle and is forced, along with Major Campbell and others, to become a slave of the Emperor to construct a section of railway from Thailand to Myanmar. In the prisoner of war camp, they endure brutal torture but also forge a strong friendship during their hellish days. Ernest establishes a "Jungle University" within the camp, uniting the prisoners together. The Japanese brutality becomes unbearable, and Major Campbell ultimately decides to implement an escape plan, but the failure of the plan leads to a once-opposed comrade sacrificing himself to save his life.
