Mary (played by Jennifer Jones) meets a man named Giovanni (played by Montgomery Clift) while vacationing in Italy. They are immediately attracted to each other and quickly become inseparable, spending two joyful days together. However, happy times are fleeting, and as Mary is about to leave Italy for Paris, Giovanni urges her to stay with him. Stubborn Mary is resolute in her decision to leave, which infuriates Giovanni, leading him to hit her in a moment of anger. As a heartbroken Mary prepares to board the train to Paris, Giovanni appears just as the train is about to depart. Risking his safety, he crosses the tracks to reach her side, and his gesture moves Mary, rekindling their relationship. Although they miss this train, the next one will arrive soon, leaving them with less and less time together.
