The story takes place in Germany in 1972. Hans (played by Julius Weckauf) is a chubby nine-year-old boy living in a small shop run by his grandmother. Hans is not particularly likeable, but he has a unique talent: he has the ability to make people laugh. No matter how down someone feels, just a couple of words from Hans can bring a smile back to their face. Hans's mother, Margarethe (played by Luise Heyer), is seriously ill, and the burden of the family rests entirely on his father, who has lost his own smile while working tirelessly to pay for medical expenses and support the family. Fortunately, the women in Hans's family are all very open-minded and strong, and their presence subtly influences Hans, shielding his spirit from the harsh realities of life.
