Young Goldmund (Janis Nivona) is sent by his father to the Mariabronn monastery to study, where he meets the devout monastery student Narcissus (Sabin Tambrea). Narcissus is dedicated to the monastery's asceticism and strict rules of life with heart and soul, and at first, Goldmund tries to follow him. A close friendship quickly develops between the two, but the restless and pleasure-seeking Goldmund soon realizes that the monastery's perspective on life is inconsistent with his free spirit. Encouraged by Narcissus, he embarks on a journey full of adventures, during which he finally encounters his great love, Lene (Henriette Confurius). However, years later, Narcissus and Goldmund meet again in a dramatic setting...
