A young Jewish girl, "Fei Ying Er," lives with her father and grandmother in a small village in Russia. In search of a better life, her father leaves for America to continue his singing career. Shortly after his departure, the village is raided, and Fei Ying Er escapes with two boys. While preparing to board a ship to America, she gets separated from them and ends up on a cruise ship heading to England. Fortunately, a couple adopts her and renames her Susie. As an adult, Susie (played by Christina Ricci) is recruited by a cabaret and arrives in Paris. During this time, she meets the materialistic Lola (Cate Blanchett) and the greedy singer Dante (John Turturro), along with the mysterious Gypsy horseman Caesar (Johnny Depp). As the Nazi threat looms closer to Paris, Susie's Jewish heritage is discovered by Dante. By this time, Susie has fallen deeply in love with Caesar, leading her into a dilemma. One night, Caesar comes to Susie's room...
