This film is adapted from two novellas by Mo Yan published in 1986, "Red Sorghum" and "Sorghum Wine." Because of a mule, "my grandmother" Jiu'er (portrayed by Gong Li) is forced by her parents to marry a 50-year-old leper who owns a distillery. On her wedding day, while being carried in a bridal sedan chair, she is intercepted by a bandit. One of the bearers, Yu Zh Change (portrayed by Jiang Wen), drives the bandit away, and Jiu'er begins to develop feelings for him. Three days later, Jiu'er returns to visit her parents. The bearer suddenly runs out from the sorghum field and takes Jiu'er away. They make love in the sorghum fields. When Jiu'er returns to the distillery, she discovers that her leprous husband has died. "My grandmother" supports the Li family's liquor workshop, and soon Yu Zh Change officially becomes "my grandfather," creating a unique method for brewing fine liquor called "Eighteen Reds." During the Anti-Japanese War, "my grandfather" and "my grandmother" collaborate to compose a tragic song.
