Payne (played by Todd Babcock) is an American doctor living in the Shanghai International Settlement. By chance, he meets the KMT spy Hao Ming (played by Tao Zeru). In his youth, Hao Ming was inspired by the October Revolution and had grand red ideals, but the brutality of the White Terror changed his original intentions, leading him to take up the knife to massacre communists. Before committing suicide, Hao Ming's wife sent their daughter Qiuqiu to a church school. Growing up, Qiuqiu (played by Mei Ting) joined the Communist Party under the influence of the communist Jin (played by Leslie Cheung) and disguised herself as Jin's wife to hide in Shanghai, caring for the seriously ill Jin. When Qiuqiu appears before Payne, he falls in love at first sight with this beautiful Chinese woman. However, upon learning the story between Qiuqiu and Jin, he decides to help them at all costs, while witnessing their romantic yet tragic red love story.
