The story takes place in 1844 in Connecticut, USA. Miranda (played by Gene Tierney), born into a poor family, receives a letter from her cousin Nicholas (played by Vincent Price), inviting her to his home to be the tutor for his daughter Catherine (played by Connie Marshall). In Miranda's eyes, Nicholas's family represents the epitome of high society, so she happily accepts the job and sets off. Soon after arriving at the mansion, Miranda hears chilling legends about the place. To make matters worse, Nicholas's wife Joanna (played by Vivienne Osborne) mysteriously dies shortly thereafter. On the night of Joanna's death, Nicholas confesses his love to Miranda, which scares her away. At this point, she has no idea that she has already become entangled in a terrifying curse.
