The story begins in Germany in 1864, when the 19-year-old Ludwig II (played by Helmut Berger) ascends to the throne, becoming the king of Bavaria. In reality, Ludwig is a very indecisive man, utterly unsuitable for being a ruler of the nation. His fragile self-esteem and weak willpower often place him in a state of distress, a suffering that intensifies after his beloved cousin Elizabeth (played by Romy Schneider) marries far away, filled with resentment. In fact, Ludwig had once envisioned fulfilling his political ambitions; however, by the second half of the 19th century, all his aspirations dissolved into illusions, surrounded by a mix of scheming individuals around him. Subsequently, in order to escape tedious political affairs, Ludwig retreats into a castle and is ultimately regarded by his ministers as having a mental illness, leading to his deposition.
