Ma Bencheng (played by Zhang Fengyi) is an illegal immigrant and "white-collar escapee". He was sentenced to eight years in prison for assault. After his release, he learns of his mother's death and that his wife Du Xia (played by Wu Jiali) has filed for divorce. In despair, he attempts suicide but ends up permanently disabled. After returning to mainland China, friendless and alone, he searches for Du Xia, who has remarried. Du Xia's brother Du Wei (played by Qin Pei) hires someone to beat up this former brother-in-law. Ma Bencheng takes Du's nephew Xiao Zheng (played by Xiao Junkun) hostage in a bid to force Du Xia to show herself. From then on, the two, one big and one small, become friends, leaving their mark wherever they wander as part of the homeless community. One day, in an attempt to save a tractor lying across the railway track, Bencheng drags his disabled legs towards an oncoming train, while Xiao Zheng rolls down a steep embankment.
