Yasujirō Ozu leisurely discusses the blessings of the mundane in married life through the taste of tea rice, while Peng Fei lightly conveys the emotional distance and closeness between mothers and daughters through the flavor of puffed rice. A mother working in the city returns to her Dai village in Yunnan, and her daughter faces the same issues as all left-behind children: loving to lie, playing on her phone, arguing with classmates, opposing teachers, and even stealing money from the temple. The death of the daughter's friend breaks the barriers, leading the mother and daughter into a deep, mysterious cave where they dance in front of a Buddha statue to mourn the deceased, also connecting their souls. The differences between urban and rural life, the clash between tradition and modernity, and the conflict between development and conservation are resolved through poetic imagery and Zen reflections; just fry up a pot of oil, make a plate of puffed rice, and mix the sweet, sour, bitter, and spicy flavors of life into a blessing for reunion.
