The young boy Zhu Yunxiang (played by Bi Xiaohai) loses his father and is left without anyone to care for him. Mr. Zhang (played by Jin Shijie), an old school worker from the mainland, is cold on the outside but warm on the inside, and takes care of Yunxiang for a while before his mother, Wu Chunlan (played by Hao Lei), arrives. Wu Chunlan moved from the mainland to Taiwan over a decade ago, and after a brief illusion of dreams shatters, she endures prison time and ends up in a seedy place. Her resentful stepfather (played by Dai Liren), who makes a living by selling goods at street stalls, harbors ill feelings toward Yunxiang's presence. Fortunately, Yunxiang befriends a local delinquent known as Pistol Boy (played by Nadou), who takes him for joyrides in a stolen scooter. Though involved in Pistol Boy's thefts and robberies from elementary school students, these adventures add some excitement to Yunxiang's monotonous life. He rarely draws unless necessary, but he makes a picture for his father and another for Pistol Boy. The third painting is of his brother from his dreams, though his brother, who has been missing for three years, was actually harmed by his stepfather. What will Yunxiang's fourth painting depict?
