On the beach, with massive waves crashing, the valiant knight Antonius Block (Max von Sydow) plays a game of chess with Death (Bengt Ekerot). During the game, the knight reflects on his life, with his experiences resonating with biblical imagery. In the later period of the 14th century Crusades, a plague spreads across the European continent, leaving the populace in despair. Block encounters a couple from a circus; the husband is deeply faithful and devout, while the wife is more pragmatic and obedient. Their mutual support brings them happiness. The knight also meets a blacksmith couple in the woods. The blacksmith is very coarse, and his wife is quite flirtatious. They perform a comedic routine for passersby, resembling a pair of ridiculous puppets. Ultimately, after experiencing a collective worship and memorial ritual, the knight and his friends confront Death once more, and the previous helplessness, fear, anger, and doubt transform into profound questions about life... This film won the Jury Prize at the 10th Cannes Film Festival.
