The restaurant waitress Xiaofanzi is a girl who is dissatisfied with her job and full of fantasies. She imagines that one day she will be able to shed her "worthless waitress uniform" and become a singer or a healthcare worker. However, reality repeatedly shatters her dreams, and Xiaofanzi becomes despondent. She detests her job even more and vents her frustrations on the customers. Zhang Zhi, a university student who grew up with Xiaofanzi, does not want to see her sink into despair, so he often comes to comfort her and tells her that all work is for the service of the people. But Xiaofanzi thinks Zhang Zhi is just preaching grand ideals. Zhang Zhi sets up a semiconductor radio for her and encourages her to learn a foreign language for revolutionary work, but Xiaofanzi finds it pointless and can't understand why another waitress, Tong Ying, is so absorbed in studying foreign languages. Furthermore, against Zhang Zhi's advice, Xiaofanzi starts a relationship with a young man named Xiaogu, who lacks ambition, and follows her own path. She explains to Zhang Zhi that she is eager to date because it's hard for someone carrying dishes to find a partner. Later, after experiencing a series of setbacks in work and love, Xiaofanzi finally realizes that Xiaogu is uneducated and lacks social morals, while Zhang Zhi is the ideal partner she dreams of. However, before she can confess her feelings to Zhang Zhi, she unexpectedly discovers that his girlfriend is her colleague Tong Ying, which profoundly shakes Xiaofanzi's thoughts. Coincidentally, Tong Ying, through hard self-study in her spare time, also manages to enroll in night school. Xiaofanzi, who thought that being a waitress was unambitious and that learning foreign languages was useless, is once again strongly shaken in her mindset. Xiaofanzi strolls to the seaside, facing the rolling waves and soaring seagulls, her emotions surge as she contemplates.
