The film describes the growth process of a boy named Shitou and his good friend Maodi, spanning from the age of nine to thirty-seven. The film is divided into four stages, viewing four women through Shitou's perspective, including the unfortunate girl Lin Laohe, who was imprisoned for communicating with the mainland and reading banned books due to her father; the melancholic girl Huang Wenye, born into an official family; the blue-eyed girl with a lifelong dream of going to America; and the trendy and open-minded girl in red, Sunny.
