Mike (Matt Damon) is a second-year law student, but he loses all his savings in a bet with casino owner Teddy (John Malkovich). Encouraged by his friend Knish (John Turturro), Mike vows to never gamble again. However, he can't resist showing off his skills at a professor's poker game, impressing everyone. When old friend Worm (Edward Norton) gets out of prison, Mike breaks his vow and returns to the gambling world. To help Worm, he even postpones his mock trial internship. Later, his girlfriend Jo discovers evidence of Mike's gambling and breaks up with him, leaving him devastated. Encouraged by Worm, Mike continues to participate in gambling tables, only to find out he has been tricked by Worm and owes a huge sum. He confronts Worm, who reveals the truth: he is being pressured by ruthless creditors. Out of friendship, Worm accepted harsh conditions but has fallen into an even more difficult predicament...
