After Martin Scorsese and Todd Phillips (of "The Hangover") consecutively dropped out of directing "The Gambler," Rupert Wyatt, director of "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," took on the remake project. After the director was set, Mark Wahlberg confirmed his involvement, set to play the lead role. Originally, when Martin Scorsese discussed this project, Leonardo DiCaprio was cast as the lead, but unfortunately, Scorsese ultimately walked away from it. The original "The Gambler" was directed by Karel Reisz and starred James Caan, released in 1974. The film is based on Fyodor Dostoevsky's novella, telling the story of a gambling-addicted college professor who coerces his students into fixing games to profit in betting, leading his life to spiral out of control as he bets on everything and ultimately falls into a bottomless pit. The new version of "The Gambler" has William Monahan, who won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for "The Departed," penning the script. Director Rupert Wyatt had previously been rumored to be a candidate for directing "Star Trek 3," but there has been no confirmation of this rumor. Mark Wahlberg is currently busy with "Transformers 4," hence "The Gambler" may not start shooting until next year, with Paramount Pictures producing.
