After Holly's (Sissy Spacek) mother passes away, her father moves her to a small town in South Dakota. There, 15-year-old Holly meets the 10-years-older hoodlum Kit (Martin Sheen). The two quickly become lovers. Kit spends his days doing nothing and taking odd jobs, and Holly's father strongly disapproves of their relationship. One day, Kit storms into Holly's home, packs her bags, and attempts to take her away. Holly's father stops them, and in the struggle, Kit shoots and kills him. Subsequently, Kit sets fire to Holly's house, creating the illusion that all three died in the blaze. Kit drives Holly to a virgin forest, and they live like primitive people.
