Millionaire George Wade (Hugh Grant) relies on the company's lawyer, Lucy Kelson (Sandra Bullock), for all his needs. Lucy is organized but a bit neurotic. She has fallen for the smart and charming George. She has been helping him manage everything from his wardrobe to divorce issues, but George shows no sign of appreciation. After five years, Lucy decides it's time to stop all of this. Initially, George doesn't want Lucy to leave, but he eventually agrees, on the condition that she finds someone to take her place. After searching, Lucy hires a young, beautiful, and ambitious lawyer named John (Alicia Witt). John is very interested in her wealthy new boss, and George seems to be attracted to her as well. Lucy finally breaks away from George, ready to take a trip at sea with her loyal boyfriend. After losing Lucy, George feels as if he has lost a close confidant; the new replacement can't fill the emotional void he feels. It turns out that what both of them needed was right next to them all along, and they never realized it until it was potentially too late.
