Gideon and the little girl Almerina travel the world making a living by telling stories. One day, they spend the night in a cave waiting for dawn to continue their journey. In the middle of the night, they encounter an old bear, and in their panic, they begin to tell a story to distract the bear in hopes of escaping unharmed. The main characters of the story are Leander, the bear king who lives in the mountains, and his son Tony. One day, Leander takes Tony to the river to practice fishing, but unfortunately, Tony is captured by a large net. Leander searches everywhere for Tony, and he becomes gloomy and neglects his duties until one day, his ministers warn him that if he doesn’t find a solution, his bear subjects will starve. His loyal aides Saltpetre and Theophilus suggest that maybe Prince Tony is in the human kingdom below the mountains. Leander immediately becomes energized and organizes the bear army to march down to the human kingdom, hoping to find Tony and, along the way, request some food from the humans.
The human kingdom is ruled by a ridiculous duke, who is utterly incompetent and obsessed with various hats. His royal advisor, AMBROSE, is a wizard who discovers that the bear army is preparing to attack. The duke, using a telescope, confirms that a dense group of bears is indeed marching downwards. He commands AMBROSE to go and stop the bears, but in the process, the human army accidentally enters the bear camp. Surprised by the sudden attack from the human army, the bear army is caught off guard. Theophilus is killed, and Leander is heartbroken. He organizes the bear army to counterattack, rolling snowballs down the hill, causing the human army to rout. After the human army retreats, a herd of wild boars charges at the bear army. At this moment, the royal advisor AMBROSE, who had mingled with the bears, casts a spell that turns all the wild boars into balloons that float into the sky.
AMBROSE returns to the human kingdom to report to the duke that the bears have been eliminated, but soon after, it is discovered that the bears are not only unharmed but have also arrived at the human kingdom. Furious and embarrassed, the duke confronts AMBROSE and orders him to annihilate the bear group. AMBROSE suggests a way to instill fear in the bears. Leander and the bear army arrive at an ambush set by AMBROSE, where they encounter the deceased Theophilus, but they do not feel fear. Theophilus tries to inform Leander about Tony's whereabouts but disappears before dawn. The plan to eliminate the bear group fails again, so AMBROSE feigns to reveal Tony's location and leads the bears to an inn harboring a giant cat. After defeating the giant cat, Leander finally finds Tony performing acrobatics in a theater. The reunion between father and son deeply moves everyone, including the bears. The duke, who is watching the performance, directly shoots at Tony, who collapses after being hit. Enraged, Leander kills the duke in revenge, and at that moment, AMBROSE uses a final spell to resurrect Tony. Leander replaces the duke as the king of humans, and from then on, humans and bears coexist peacefully. The story ends here, but the old bear in the cave suddenly speaks, saying that this is not over yet, and the peace between humans and bears will not last long. Gideon and little Almerina are startled, not expecting a bear to speak.
The old bear continues the story...
Leander becomes king, and AMBROSE, having saved Tony, becomes his advisor and godfather. Tony grows up in the human world and possesses no bear traits, resembling humans closely. King Leander is very displeased with this, yearning for the days of freedom in the mountains. His bear prime minister, Saltpetre, begins to plot, using schemes to create a rift between King Leander, Tony, and AMBROSE, eventually imprisoning Tony and AMBROSE together. After AMBROSE sees through Saltpetre's schemes, he uses magic to summon a sea serpent. Leander leads the army into battle, thwarting Saltpetre's coup, and capturing him. The misunderstandings between Leander and Tony are resolved, but during the battle, Leander sacrifices himself and urges Tony to return with the bear group to the mountains.
Tony complies, and the story concludes as dawn breaks. Gideon and little Almerina prepare to continue their journey. Before they leave, the old bear in the cave secretly shares a secret with the little girl. Gideon asks if the old bear they encountered is Tony, and the little girl smiles without answering.
The two arrive at the kingdom to perform but see Saltpetre begging on the street.
