During the Anti-Japanese War in Baiyangdian, Hebei, the mischievous and reckless boy Zhang Ga (Anjisi) witnesses his grandmother being killed by Japanese troops while covering for the Eighth Route Army's escape. He then sets off to the county town alone to find the guerrilla squad leader Luo Jinbao (Zhang Ying) to help him avenge his grandmother. However, when he actually meets Luo Jinbao, he mistakenly takes him for a traitor to the country, leading to a comic misunderstanding. After clearing up the misunderstanding, Zhang Ga dreams of becoming a little soldier in the Eighth Route Army and wants to own a gun. As a result of his strong desire for a gun, he not only plays tricks during a bet with a chubby friend (Wu Keqin) but also hides a real gun he secretly confiscated during a battle in a bird's nest on a tree, causing further comedic trouble. Zhang Ga does not treat these jokes lightly; unable to make sense of it all, he enlists his chubby friend to return to the county town to seek revenge for his grandmother on his own. In the county town, Zhang Ga encounters the Japanese officer Kuitian (Ge Cunzhuang) and a translator (Wang Shu). After a battle of wits and courage, neither of the two gains anything from Zhang Ga. Through a series of experiences, Zhang Ga evolves from a reckless troublemaker into a true scout for the Eighth Route Army.
