The story takes place in 1921, where Eva (Marion Cotillard) and her sister Magda (Angela Sarafyan) cannot resist the allure of the bustling city lights and set off from Poland to seek their fortunes in New York. Along the way, Magda unfortunately contracts tuberculosis, a then-incurable disease, and is quarantined in a hospital on Ellis Island, leading to their painful separation. Upon arriving in New York, Eva discovers that everything is far from the beautiful fantasy she had imagined; she tragically falls into the hands of a pimp named Bruno (Joaquin Phoenix) and becomes a prostitute. Eva's life is filled with pain and humiliation, and reuniting with her sister becomes her only belief. In a chance encounter, Eva meets a magician named Orlando (Jeremy Renner), and the kind-hearted Orlando helps her realize that he might be her only stepping stone to a new life.
