This film is adapted from Arnost Lustig's novel "A Girl from Antwerp." In 1973, Czech Jewish writer Willy Fred, living in New York, learns that the mother of his son's girlfriend had also been imprisoned in Auschwitz. The father and son pay a visit, and Willy meets Colette Cohen, his camp lover whom he has sought for thirty years, and his memories are reignited... In July 1943, Willy is transferred to Auschwitz-Birkenau, and shortly after, Belgian Jewish girl Colette is brought in by train. Willy advises Colette, who has just disembarked, to identify herself as a seamstress, which saves her from the gas chamber. Later, Colette is assigned to inspect Jewish clothing for hidden valuables; Willy secretly delivers food and medicine within the camp whenever he can, and their shared fate leads them to fall in love quickly... The camp commander, Wieszeck, is brutal and easily resorts to gunfire for any violation, and he becomes fixated on Colette, using both coercion and manipulation to claim her... In September 1944, as the Soviet army advances, the Nazis intensify the implementation of their "Final Solution" for the Jews, and the remaining Jews are to be transferred to the Hohen concentration camp. During this time, Colette becomes pregnant. Willy finally finds an opportunity to escape hidden in a truck transporting wood, but just as everything is arranged, Colette is delayed because of Wieszeck's entanglement. For the sake of the woman he loves, Willy gives up this chance. Colette is ultimately taken away on a train bound for Hohen, and after being rescued, she gives birth to Wieszeck's daughter, Hannah. In January 1945, Willy encounters the Soviet army during his transfer, and Wieszeck is killed by angry prisoners for his ongoing executions of fleeing inmates. After the war, Willy searches for Colette in vain... The play also portrays several people who helped them: Polish doctor David is silenced for knowing about Colette's pregnancy; the fierce administrator Fritz helps Willy multiple times; Polish female administrator Broda, though greedy, secretly assists Colette. She is executed for helping Colette obtain a pass...
