Charlotte (Ingrid Bergman) is an outstanding piano performer in a certain orchestra, and her daughter Eva (Liv Ullmann) is the wife of a pastor working in a rural community. There is a deep emotional chasm between them, and they have not communicated for seven years. After learning about the death of Charlotte's second husband, Eva writes to invite Charlotte to stay with her. Both try to get along amicably, but they inevitably bring up the past. Eva resents Charlotte for not giving her enough care during her childhood, focusing instead on her own career, which alienated her from another daughter, Helene (Lena Nyman), who has severe disabilities and can only communicate unclearly. Meanwhile, Charlotte feels burdened and moody due to Helene living with Eva, compounded by the heavy blow of her husband's passing.
