A young man from Cleveland, William Blake (played by Johnny Depp), heads west to seek his fortune, preparing to attend a factory job interview for an accounting position. However, he misses the interview time and is turned away. He also endures various humiliations from the local owner of Dickinson Metalworks, even having a gun pointed at his head. When he arrives at a local tavern feeling dejected, a one-night stand occurs. Unexpectedly, the girlfriend's boyfriend bursts in, and a bullet passes through her chest, embedding itself in William's.
