Pei Gang (played by Ou Wei) has been spoiled by his grandmother (played by Fu Bihui) since childhood, developing a domineering and unruly personality. In a quarrel, Pei Gang is framed and forced to kill three people. He is arrested, imprisoned, and sentenced to death, to be executed later. Despite his grandmother and the official (played by Zhou Shaoqing) trying various ways to save him, Pei Gang refuses to cooperate and openly admits to his crimes. Pei Gang is the sole heir of the Pei family, and to prevent the family line from dying out, his grandmother sends a woman named Lian'er (played by Tang Baoyun) to prison for him to have children. That night, his grandmother freezes to death by the roadside. Upon learning this, Pei Gang is overcome with guilt and pain, developing a genuine relationship with Lian'er as husband and wife.
