Ben (played by Nicolas Cage) is a down-and-out screenwriter who drowns his sorrows in alcohol. After being fired from his job, he sells all his possessions and heads to Las Vegas to begin his slow suicide plan. He intends to drink himself to death within a few weeks. In the bizarre world of Las Vegas, he meets a prostitute named Sarah (played by Elisabeth Shue), who lives a similarly unfortunate life, controlled by a pimp and continually attempting to escape to no avail. Ben and Sarah share a night together, confiding in each other as fellow lost souls. They quickly move in together, but Sarah does not stop Ben from continuing his heavy drinking. Ben sinks deeper into his own world until one day he finds himself in bed with another woman in Sarah’s apartment. Furious, Sarah throws Ben out. Struggling under the torment of alcohol, Ben calls Sarah, hoping for a chance to revive both life and love.
