The story takes place in 1941, during the German army's sweep across Europe. It begins with the singing of two poor boys who are about to head to Belgrade, and the narrative unfolds from the bus they are riding. A variety of people board this bus, including a retired veteran, two wealthy individuals, a newlywed couple, and a father-son driver duo. Various unexpected events give rise to a range of stories, narratives, and activities: being stopped by soldiers at an intersection; getting a flat tire due to a farmer collecting tolls on another road; encountering a marching local detachment while resting by a lake, leading to the requisition of the bus, after which the driver's son is forcibly recruited; a retired veteran loses his wallet on the road, but the passengers suspect the two poor boys and assault them. Ultimately, the bus is burned and overturned under bombing from German planes, yet the two grimy boys still manage to crawl out of the window and continue singing... thus the difficult journey to Belgrade comes to an end.
