Agent Gao Yunlong (played by Ruan Songyang) of the Oracle Bureau is tasked with entering the Ming Dynasty. While searching for his previously departed friend Cao Xiaomei (played by Chen Jiahui), he investigates a conspiracy behind time and space disruptions and becomes embroiled in the conflict between the Donglin Academy and the Eastern Bureau. Members of the Donglin Academy are successively murdered, but there are no clues to the murderer. The academy leader Ye Jingqing (played by Song Tingjun) ultimately reports to the court, prompting the emperor to order a thorough investigation into who is instigating the people, directly pointing to the Eastern Bureau.
