In a secret chamber of the Ming Dynasty, the Grand Secretary retrieves the edict of the late emperor's order for a regent, preparing to publicly announce among the civil and military officials which of the five royal uncles has been appointed as the regent. Suddenly, a masked stranger appears, assassinating the Grand Secretary and seizing the edict. The chief of the capital's police, Tie Zhongjie, is struck by a poisoned arrow during the chase and, before dying, tells his brother Tie Zhongying that it was a "Dandinghong" poison. Tie Zhongying is tasked with solving the case. The capable and promising King of Jeju, who is a contender for the regent position, is killed by a poisoned arrow during a hunt, again with "Dandinghong" poison. The lecherous King of Runan also meets his demise from a poisoned arrow while pursuing romantic interests, with the same poison used. The King of Duanzhou suspects that it was the Han sisters, sworn enemies of the princes due to a vendetta against their father, who are responsible. He sends troops to destroy their stronghold at Baima Mountain and captures the eldest sister, Feiyun. The sisters Yiyun and Caiyun attempt a prison break, but are ambushed. Just when they are in peril, they are rescued by the masked Yilüe. Upon learning that Feiyun has been killed, the Yiyun sisters vow to take revenge by assassinating the King of Duanzhou. During the assassination attempt, Tie Zhongying arrives and discovers that the attacker is Caiyun, his childhood sweetheart, and that the slain prince is not the King of Duanzhou but the King of Luoyang. Only the Kings of Changsha and Duanzhou remain, but who is the true culprit? The case becomes increasingly complicated. After making initial deductions, Tie Zhongying hypothesizes that the next target will be the King of Changsha and is determined to uncover the truth. Indeed, one night, the masked stranger leads Yiyun and Caiyun into the King of Changsha's palace. Tie Zhongying immediately charges at the masked figure and wounds it in the right arm, causing it to flee. Meanwhile, the Han sisters are ambushed, and Yiyun is tragically killed by a barrage of arrows, while Tie Zhongying saves Caiyun. At the place where the King of Luoyang was shot, Tie Zhongying discovers a porcelain vial containing "Dandinghong" poison, marked with the insignia of the King of Changsha's palace. Tie Zhongying investigates the palace again but is captured. However, he eventually escapes from prison. With Caiyun's help, Tie Zhongying engages in a battle of wits and courage against the Kings of Changsha and Duanzhou, as well as the masked stranger, ultimately uncovering that the masked figure is Zhou Feng, the steward of the King of Duanzhou. In a fit of rage, Tie Zhongying kills the true culprit, the King of Changsha, who poisoned the three princes. However, the King of Duanzhou, now appointed as the regent, is plotting anew. Tie Zhongying resolutely resigns from office and embarks on a journey with Caiyun.
