The story is set during the westward expansion period in the United States. Yangxi (played by Richard Dix) arrives in the vast and desolate Okhnamara with his wife, Shabra (played by Irene Dunne), holding ambitious dreams and hoping to make a mark here. The living conditions in Okhnamara are quite harsh and perilous; however, the couple works together diligently to slowly improve and establish their home. As their life stabilizes over time, the local ranchers feel their interests are being threatened and often create trouble for Yangxi, but he cleverly resolves these conflicts with his intelligence. Yangxi sympathizes deeply with the indigenous people living in the area, and at the same time, he harbors a strong hatred towards the capitalists who oppress and exploit the natives. As time passes, the conflicts between the two sides become increasingly acute.
