The film is adapted from the novel by Belgian art historian Michael Francis Gibson and is a thriller set in the Renaissance period, revolving around the famous work "The Way to Calvary" by the Dutch painter Bruegel. "The Mill and the Cross" is an art history lesson disguised as a film, which had its initial public presentation not in cinemas or film festivals but in places like the Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The film takes viewers back to 16th century Holland, where Bruegel, while creating "The Way to Calvary," uses a biblical story to reflect on the cruelty of the Spanish rulers and the resistance of the Dutch people. Lech Majewski combines art history research with CGI and 3D technology in a bid to recreate the social environment, thoughts, and feelings of the artist during the creation of this work. The emotional impact of standing in front of a piece of art is what makes us all dizzy, thinking it is the so-called creative impulse, isn't it? Notably, Bruegel's other masterpiece "The Hunters in the Snow" inspired Swedish director Roy Andersson to create his next work, titled "A Bird's Song at the Edge of a Tree," which is expected to premiere at the Cannes or Venice Film Festival next year.
