In 1970s Scotland, a somewhat neurotic woman named Beth (Emily Watson) marries an oil worker, Jan (Stellan Skarsgård), defying religious constraints. Their loving life does not last long, as Jan suffers severe injuries in an oil-related incident and becomes paralyzed. Beth feels intense guilt, believing her desires led to this tragedy. To awaken her husband's vitality, Beth seduces different men and engages in relationships, hoping to conquer Jan's condition through the power of desire. Surprisingly, Jan's health shows improvement; however, the villagers cast scornful glances at Beth, and she is sent to a mental institution. The belief in sacrificing for love burns fiercely in Beth's heart, pushing her once again into despair.
