Gabriel (played by Marion Cotillard) was born into a bourgeois family in the south of France, where her parents arranged her marriage to a Spanish farm worker named José (played by Alex Brendemühl). Although José is honest and kind, treating Gabriel with great care, she has no feelings for him; their relationship is not the kind of love she longs for. Gabriel is diagnosed with kidney stones and goes to a spa for recovery, where she encounters a man named André (played by Louis Garrel), who is also recuperating after being injured in the Indian War. The spark of love ignites between Gabriel and André, and the two decide to elope.
