25-year-old César (played by Eduardo Noriega) inherits wealth from his deceased parents, allowing him to live comfortably. His frequent changes of girlfriends have earned him a reputation for being carefree among his friends, but recently César has been entangled with a woman named Nuria. To get rid of Nuria, César seeks help from his friend’s girlfriend, Sofia (played by Penélope Cruz). The story switches to a prison, where the fearsome-looking César is detained on suspicion of murder. Doctor Antonio is trying to coax him into revealing what happened. It turns out that Nuria was involved in a car accident with César outside Sofia's house, which left César disfigured... César wakes up from a dream to date Sofia in a park, but soon he realizes that the park date was just a dream. The doctors are powerless to restore César's appearance, and before long, he signs a vague agreement. The hospital's new equipment miraculously restores César's looks, but he discovers that Sofia is actually a fictitious character he created. César struggles to distinguish between dreams and reality and decides to team up with Antonio to uncover the truth... This film won multiple prestigious awards, including the Tokyo Governor’s Award at the 1998 Tokyo International Film Festival.
