Walter (played by Denzel Washington) is a subway dispatcher in New York, responsible for controlling the operation of various lines. One day, a group of terrorists hijacks subway line 123, led by the ruthless mastermind Ryder (played by John Travolta), a former American mercenary who demands a ransom of 10 million dollars for the release of the hostages. Coincidentally, this amount is also the maximum limit for withdrawals from insurance and commercial loans. The subway 123 races through the tunnel, numerous transit police are killed, the driver is taken hostage, and the passengers are in a state of panic.
