The film is based on the famous Peking Opera piece "The Horse-Blocker." It tells the story of Yang Ye (played by Wu Yue), who dies in Youzhou, and after the emperor bestows upon the Yang family the Jiuhuan Golden Blade, which falls into the hands of the Liao state. In their grief and anger, Yang Ba Jie (played by Zhang Xintong) and Yang Jiu Mei (played by Liu Xinlei) go to the Liao country to retrieve the treasured blade. On their way back, they encounter the exiled Song general Jiao Guangpu (played by Song Tianshuo), leading to a relationship forged without conflict, as they join forces to escort the blade back to their homeland.
