In 1986, the Swedish National Health and Welfare Department commissioned director Roy Andersson to create an educational film on the topic of AIDS, in order to disseminate information about the origins and prevention of AIDS to students and recruits in schools and the military. However, during the filming, the Health and Welfare Department requested Andersson to terminate the project. The reason was that they watched the footage that had been shot and questioned the reliability of the information presented and the filming style. Andersson did not comply and instead completed the film on his own. The film adopts a conspiracy-theory narrative regarding the origins of AIDS. In its portrayal, the AIDS virus did not originate in Africa and spread from animals to humans, but was created by American scientists in a laboratory and subsequently applied to human experiments. Today, this film is seen as an important step in the formation of Roy Andersson's personal style.
