Ren Laole's daughter and Li Laoda's son are to be married, but on the day of their engagement banquet, the two families end up arguing. The Ren family wants to recruit a son-in-law, while the Li family wants to marry off their daughter, neither side willing to back down. Ren Laole, however, has insight and proposes a good idea: the two families should pool their money to buy a hand-operated tractor. This way, they can facilitate the children's marriage while also acquiring a valuable labor force, achieving a win-win situation. Unexpectedly, this plan faces opposition from his wife, Aunt Le, and Li Laoda. Unable to satisfy both his wife and the in-laws, Ren Laole ultimately gathers his courage and trades construction materials for the tractor.
Just when Li Laoda’s family is celebrating, Ren Laole's tractor arrives, diverting everyone's attention and ruining the festive mood for Li Laoda. In a fit of anger, he drags his son, who knows how to drive a tractor, back home. With heavy rain falling, the tractor gets stuck in the open field, leaving Ren Laole anxiously trying to get it home, only to be locked out by Aunt Le. However, Ren Laole's efforts are not in vain; the tractor helps him gain respect. It competes with Li Laoda’s hoe for two rounds, achieving decisive victories. The first encounter involves transporting fertilizer, which leaves Li Laoda exhausted and unable to claim it all for himself; the second involves helping others, thwarting Li Laoda's plans to benefit himself while assisting the needy. Later, Ren Laole partners with the needy family to open a bamboo craft workshop, diversifying their business, and their lives begin to improve. In an attempt to get ahead, Li Laoda arranges another marriage, this time to a daughter who is robust and comes with a cow and her calf. As a result, his family is split with illness and departures, all wanting to separate from him, leaving him unable to even plant seedlings. What frustrates him more is Ren Laole, who not only refuses to help but also takes the opportunity to raise the labor prices. This is, in fact, Ren Laole's "poison to cure poison" strategy, aimed at helping Li Laoda "heal." Eventually, Li Laoda comes to his senses, recognizes his mistakes, and the two families reconcile.
