This film tells the tragic stories of seven Iranian women. A woman receives her daughter, still in swaddling clothes, from the hospital, but she is not happy because previous ultrasounds showed she was expecting a boy, and now she is left in disbelief. The local customs of valuing boys over girls leave her feeling trapped. A recently released girl searches for money with a female companion, enduring great hardships to raise the funds, yet ultimately hesitates to board the train back home. An unmarried pregnant girl is cast out by her brother and, after her boyfriend's death, has no choice but to undergo an abortion. A middle-aged woman, upon her release from prison, discovers her man has been unfaithful. A nurse tries to help her, but her own marriage is at a standstill... This film won the Golden Lion for Best Film at the 57th Venice Film Festival.
