In the autumn of 1964, in Oregon, USA. Composer Glenn Holland, who harbored great ideals, takes a position as a music teacher at a high school to earn money to support his career. He sees this as a reluctant compromise, as the burdens of family life force him to face reality. On his first day at school, the musically inexperienced students give him a difficult first impression. Not only do they play off-key, but they've never even heard of the renowned classical composer Bach. Holland's confidence is shaken, and the female principal, Jacob, offers him several well-meaning critiques. While her husband faces setbacks at work, his wife, who works as a photographer, patiently comforts and advises him; his friend, physical education teacher Bill Meister, shares his own experiences to show Holland that teaching students requires selfless love and ample time. With Holland's careful nurturing, white student Gertrude Lann and Black student Louis Ruth, who were once clueless about music, learn to play the clarinet and the drums, respectively. Just as Holland immerses himself in teaching, his son is born, only to be revealed as a child with congenital deafness. This blow shifts Holland's focus on family, leading to a vague romance with the beautiful student Luwena Morgan during his periods of negativity and confusion. His wife senses the subtle changes in her husband but does not address them. After Morgan leaves for further studies in New York, Holland channels all his energy into his son and teaching, mending his relationship with his wife. Over the next 30 years, Holland not only improves his students' musical education but also earns their respect and affection through love, trust, and understanding. Before his retirement, the grateful students hold a grand farewell party for him, with an orchestra performing a stirring "American Symphony" to pay the highest tribute to Holland.
