Tahimi is a minibus driver who makes a living by picking up passengers in Manila every day. He is very interested in everything American, whether it's movies, music, or his dream girl - Miss America. His must-listen radio station is "Voice of America," and he is particularly fascinated by the American space program, idolizing the rocket scientist Werner Von Braun who defected from East Germany. He even formed a WVB fan club in his village, recruiting local children as members and fundraising for the beauty pageant of Miss Philippines by selling popsicles.
Tahimi feels that the village is gradually deteriorating, unable to keep up with the times. The outdated lifestyle of the villagers saddens him, and he even looks down on his friends who grew up with him because he is now a bamboo house craftsman. Although building bamboo houses is a traditional Filipino skill, few people are willing to learn it anymore. Tahimi desires a more spacious and brighter house and wants to live a more modern "international life." One day, he meets an American businessman on the road who needs a private driver, so Tahimi goes to Paris with him. At first, life in Paris is exhilarating, but when his only friend, a street vendor in Paris, is pressured and persecuted by a nearby supermarket and eventually commits suicide, Tahimi begins to question this money-centric capitalist society. Why does the world prioritize supermarkets? Why are countless old buildings torn down only to have more luxurious villas built in their place? He attempts to resist in his own way, only to quickly realize its futility and wakes up from his dream in time to return home.
