Marcello (played by Marcello Mastroianni) is a columnist for a magazine. He once tried to become a writer but failed, ending up chasing celebrity gossip all day. Marcello often attends socialite parties and secretly befriends photographers to design and shoot celebrities' private moments, later exposing them to the public. Marcello has a girlfriend, Emma, and on the way home, he catches a ride with a madam who shares many anecdotes from the world of pleasure, further deepening his disdain for the social scene. During a Christian ceremony, a model from America constantly poses for the media, and later, Marcello's critic friend Steiner points out her hypocrisy, helping him gradually realize the decay of high society and reassess his own life.
