This film chronicles the epic and legendary life of the Indian spiritual leader Mahatma Gandhi. In 1893, 24-year-old Gandhi (played by Ben Kingsley) is invited to South Africa to work as a lawyer, determined to lead Indian immigrants in nonviolent protest actions, resulting in his imprisonment. After his release, Gandhi returns to his homeland, establishing a monastery in the Champaran region, joining the independence movement led by the Indian National Congress, and promoting the philosophy of nonviolent resistance. During the movement, Gandhi was imprisoned four times; through his persistent efforts and the Congress’s leadership, Indian independence finally became a priority, and Gandhi attended the roundtable conference in London in 1931 to discuss independence. However, as independence drew near, religious tensions between Muslims and Hindus in India intensified, posing new challenges to Gandhi's philosophy of nonviolent resistance... The film won eight Academy Awards in 1982, including Best Picture, Best Director (Richard Attenborough), Best Actor (Ben Kingsley), Best Original Screenplay, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, and Best Editing, and received nominations for Best Makeup, Best Film Music, and Best Sound.
